Tropical Storm Earl

Hurricane Earl skirted North Carolina’s Outer Banks, with the eye of the storm passing just 85 miles offshore of Cape Hatteras Thursday night into early Friday morning. However, the Outer Banks were still hit hard by storm surge flooding and hurricane-force wind gusts. Some local highways were closed, scattered power outages reported, and at least 400 people spent the night in shelters.

The now downgraded Tropical Storm Earl is passing by southeastern New England on its way into Canada.
